Football clubs and fans across England are increasingly frustrated that, as many aspects of life have lockdown restrictions eased or lifted, even a small number of fans are still not allowed into football grounds.

It’s created something of an anomaly.

Crowds are being seen in many public places, while football matches – even ones that would perhaps attract only 50 or 100 people – are having to take place behind closed doors.

Many small clubs are struggling big-time, having had no gate or bar income since March, and say fans must be allowed back in now, or at least before league seasons begin.

The situation was summed up nicely by Littlehampton Town FC, who seized on a tweet by Littlehampton CC that highlighted a nice but socially distanced crowd at their match on Saturday.

“But,” said the football club, “we can’t have a crowd at the same ground for football for a 90 minute game not 6 hours!! #LetFansIn”
