Tough start for Stags as they concede ten in two - but new face gives boost

Midhurst manager Andy Ewen reflected on a typical game of two halves after the Stags opened their SCFL division one campaign with a 4-1 home defeat to Mile Oak.

Kieran Carter gave Midhurst the lead but Mile Oak levelled before the break and took charge in the second half.

Ewen said: “It was a huge disappointment. First half we competed really well and were the better side. We hit the woodwork, their keeper made two very good saves.

“Our next big chance fell to Kieran Carter – who I knew would take it as he’s so composed in front of goal – to give us a deserved lead. Mile Oak punished our sloppy play for their equaliser but if we’d come in three goals up nobody could have argued.

“In the second half we started slowly and got punished. Jake Slater saw red, which I felt was a poor decision. This affected us massively as Jake is a big player for us and we then got opened up easily which was frustrating as we spend a lot of time on our shape. “

Ewen said Midhurst had picked up a few injuries which had left them light up front. “Matt Rowland will be out for a few months, Robbie Tambling has tweaked his hamstring and Jake’s red card has come at the wrong time for us,” he said.

“The good news came from from my assistant Dan Trussler – he’s been working hard to get Oli Kershaw signed, which he did Saturday, Oli will be a great addition for us.”

Midhurst lost 6-1 at Littlehampton Town in midweek and head to Seaford Town Saturday.
