Glorious Goodwood: Day one as it happened

The weather is just about perfect on the Downs with the sun beating down on the crowd who have gathered to see what the opening day of the five-day festival has to offer.

11.50am. The gates have been open for an hour and the racecourse is gradually filling up. A crowd of around 12,000 or 13,000 is expected today – the lowest of the week. The bet365 Lennox Stakes is today’s feature race, a Group 2 contest that Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes have high hopes of winning with Toormore.

12noon. The going remains Good, Good to Firm in places on the round course (Watered). There was a shower early yesterday evening, which ceased at 6pm. It has been dry since.

Seamus Buckley, Goodwood’s Clerk of the Course, said at 9.30am: “We watered selectively yesterday evening to maintain the current going description. The forecast up to and including Friday is for predominantly dry weather.

“I am very pleased with the condition of the course and looking forward to tremendous racing during the five days of Glorious Goodwood, especially the latest Duel on the Downs between Kingman and Toronado.”

12.40 Temperature has gone up a few degrees even since the gates open. Perfect day for it, may even get a bit too hot for us workers up here.

1pm. News regarding tomorrow’s Sussex Stakes - War Command is ruled out (vet’s certificate). That leaves Darwin, Toronado, Kingman, Outstrip in thr race.

Looks like Hughes and Hannon are the ones to follow, for a change, an d racecourse boss Adam Waterworth reckons they could even win the first three races of day one.

1.25. My top (and only) celebrity spot so far has been none other than TV’s Henry Kelly, one-time presenter of Game For A Laugh and other top shows. When he came in he was greeted by a lady who informed him she was on his last-ever Going For Gold. Small world.

1.30. There’s a pundits’ panel going through the card in the winner’s enclosure - among the experts is Racing UK presenter Oli Bell, who is one of many people featured in the Chi Observer’s Glorious magazine, which you can pick up from our office in Eastgate Square or at the racecourse all week.

1.50 Let the action begin – and 18 go in the bet365.com Stakes.

2pm. The opener goes to Sennockian Star, a 14/1 starter, ridden by Joe Fanning for Mark Johnston - who also trained third-placed Salutation. Second was Ajman Bridge.

Mark Johnston has been the only trainer to (temporarily) take away Richard Hannon’s title of top trainer on the Downs in recent years and he always targets this festival with some of his top horses. At one stage in that first race, his horses were first, second and third, but one fell away to allow Luca Cumani’s Ajman Bridge into second place.

Johnston said: “All three of our jockeys rode fine races. That was Busatto’s best run for a while in the most competitive race he’s been in for a while - Royston rode a great race in front and kicked clear at just the right moment meaning it was going to take good ones to get past him. First Salutation did, then I thought we were going to be out of it [when Ajman Bridge threatened] but thankfully Sennockian Star appeared.

“Before the race I said everyone’s talking about Salutation, but it really has to be Sennockian Star because conditions are spot on for him and it’s rare for him to run a bad race. He’s run poorly at Epsom and Redcar this season but each time he failed to get a good start - he seems to sulk if he gets in behind, but I knew if he was thereabouts at the start he would be there at the finish.

Fanning added: “They went a nice gallop up front, which suits this lad - I think that he is better getting a lead. Inside the final furlong, I thought that I would always get there.”

2.15. The going is now good to firm all over.

2.20 Next up is the bet365 Molecomb Stakes - first of the week’s Group races, a Group 3 contest. Beacon (Hannon/Hughes) is highly fancied.

2.25 Richard Hughes is chasing a fifth consecutive Racing UK Glorious Goodwood Top Jockey Award but bet365 believe Ryan Moore is the man to beat. The firm makes Moore its 11/8 favourite with Hughes a standout price at 13/8.

Hughes first claimed the title in 2010 when partnering a remarkable nine winners, only one behind Gordon Richards’ record haul of 10 achieved in 1947 and 1949, and has notched up a further 17 winners over the last three seasons, including eight 12 months ago.

2.35 The bet365 Molecomb Stakes is won by Cotai Glory (3/1), ridden by George Baker for trainer Charlie Hills. Beacon was third, behind Jamie Spencer on Fast Act.

Hills said: “Cotai Glory has a lot of speed and we knew the track would suit him. We were just slightly worried that his last race was quite recent and today might come too soon. “He is quite highly-strung but, with racing, he has certainly got better. He’s all about speed - he’s from a very fast family in his pedigree.”

Baker said: “He is a very quick horse and he has done very well because he is not completely straightforward but he has a lot of ability. He has a very high cruising speed and he just killed them off. He has a lot of speed and is using it the right way now. Racing has really improved him and he has settled down considerably. He is definitely going the right way and he is a very, very quick horse.”

2.50 Seamus Buckley is already making plans to water the course tonight. It’s pretty quick at the moment.

Next it’s the big race of the day - the Group 2 bet365 Lennox Stakes. Last year’s winner Garswood (Richard Fahey / Ryan Moore) is in among seven runners but Toormore (Hughes / Hannon) is the favourite.

3.10 It’s another surprise result in the Lennox and there’s still no joy for Hannon and Hughes. The day’s feature race is won by Adam Kirby on 7/1 shot Es Que Love, trained by the in-form Clive Cox. Toormore was second.

I’m delighted to win this because we’ve missed out a couple of times before with Dunelight and it’s a race I’ve always wanted to win so it’s nice to get it in the bag,” said Cox. “We’ve won a Group Two and he’s well-entered now for the rest of the year. I’m not sure where we’ll go but he’s versatile on trip, he’s even run over five furlongs but I think this is his best distance.

“He is versatile in that he is quick enough for six furlongs but is clearly able over seven. I think this is his ground today - he enjoyed that very much. He is in the Hungerford and the Park Stakes and we will see how we go in between.”

After riding his 24th Goodwood winner, and second at the Glorious meeting, Kirby said: “I’m really pleased with him, but coming here we felt he had a massive chance. He does travel very strongly, and he came there on the bridle, but it’s never easy to time it just right at this track.

“Last time [when third over six furlongs at Newbury] we learned a lot about him - he’s not ungenuine, but we just wanted to play him a bit later today and it has paid off, although the gap didn’t really come any earlier than we wanted. Clive has done a really good job with him and everything has gone well.

“The season is going really well - Clive is a big supporter and I have a lot of people around me that help out. The horses are in good form, so long may it last.”

3.35The bet365 Summer Stakes is next.

3.45 Van Percy (8/1) takes the bet365 Summer Stakes in a photo finish from Havana Cooler. Noble Silk is third. Paul Hanagan was a faller on White Nile and may miss the rest of the day’s racing.

3.55 And at last one of our top tipsters has a winner - Goodwood racecourse MD Adam Waterworth picked out Van Percy as the winner of the Summer Stakes. You can see all five tipsters’ selections via the link below - for what they’re worth!

Trainer Balding expects Van Percy to head to Australia later this year, and said: “He’s tough, not very big, but all heart, and I thought David did a fantastic job from a draw that was not easy. That was really well done by him and he was in the right place all the way.

“With a penalty now he is likely to get into the Ebor and that is an obvious target, and it is within the quarantine timings [to go to Australia] so that works out really well.”

4pm. No doubles for any jockey or trainer yet, though Adam Kirby - who regularly does well here - was close to completing back-to-back wins in the last.

4.30. William Buick has his first Goodwood win of the week, riding 13/2 contender Misleading, trained by Peter Chapple-Hyam, to an ultimately-comfortable victory in the bet365 EBF Maiden Stakes. Aussie Ruler and Dark Profit were second and third.

“Misleading is named after me!” joked Chapple-Hyam. “He is nice but still raw and immature. I did say to Alex (Cole, racing manager for Fitri Hay) not to run two in the same race because this horse goes nicely.

“I have always liked him but he has had sore shins. We have taken our time and I am pleased for Jim (Hay) who has been a good supporter.

“He is qualifies for French premiums, so he will go over there at some stage. He is in the Gimcrack but won’t go there if I have my way.”

4.45. Suddenly there’s only two races to go - the next of which is the bet365 Stakes handicap.

5.00. Ryan Moore justifies that favourites’ tag in the race to be the week’s top jockey with his first win of the festival - guiding the 3/1 favourite Extremity, trained by Hugo Palmer, home in the bet365 Stakes.

Palmer is eyeing a race in Turkey for Extremity, a big chestnut three-year-old who wore down runner-up Buckstay near the post to win by a short-head. The successful trainer said: “There’s a race over a mile and a quarter at the Istanbul International Meeting for three-year-olds only and it’s worth a fortune, so we have that in mind.

“There’s also a mile race at York which we won last year with Sure Squeeze and that’s a possibility. He’s had a hard race today - I hoped the cheekpieces would make a difference and they seem to have done. He was always just getting there.

5.20 Ready for the last - the Casino at bet365 Stakes.

5.25 And it goes to Inxile, ridden by Tom Queally, a replacement for the injured Hanagan, and trained by David Nicholls.

6pm. Clerk of the Course Seamus Buckley announced that much of the course will be watered after racing this evening.

“We’ll put 4-5 millimetres of water on about 75 per cent of the course after racing,” said Buckley. “The ground has quickened up considerably through the day and it will just help take the sting out if it. Hopefully that will leave us on the easy side of good-to-firm.

“We are forecast to be dry through to Friday and then we might get some rain from Friday through to Saturday.”

Paul Hanagan, whose mount White Nile came down at the top of the hill in the bet365 Summer Handicap (3.40pm), hurt an arm but x-rays taken on-course were inconclusive and the jockey set off for his Newmarket home by helicopter rather than going to St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester for further checks.
