Golf: Pat's delighted to ride back into Cowdray Park

Her vice-captain Ann Tyrrell, knowing her fondness for horses, created a marvellous scene of ladies galloping down the fairway on hobby horses and a pantomime horse, together with a real-life adorable miniature pony.

After the drive-in, 100 intrepid golfers set out to play a shotgun competition in heavy drizzle and chilly winds.

Four-and-a-half hours later, 72 of them made it back to the clubhouse having completed the full 18 holes.

The winning ladies’ team comprised Sue Brown, Janice Leath, Jenny Clegg and Sally Williams with 82 points.

The men’s winners were Dave Hirons, John Doran, David Heard and Alan Sibley with 97.

Top mixed team were Phil Cummins, Brian Street, Wendy Street and Lil Cummins with 92. Second were Polly Davenport, Terry Hughes and Peter Harding with 85; third Cliff Davis, Janet Poat, Marilyn Davis and Roger Poat with 84 points; and fourth were Alan Richardson, Chris Harridge, Terry Adsett and Glenda Luff with 83.

Nearest the pins for the ladies were, on the ninth hole, Angela Pike and on the 11th Mandy Lucking. For the gents,

Kevin Raishbrook and David Heard were nearest the third and 17th respectively.

Pat raised £1,000 for her charity Canine Partners, based in Heyshott.

Dank and dismal conditions prevailed when Cowdray Park seniors held their annual championship.

Players had qualified by finishing first or second in the competitions during the year. The vast majority of these competitions were Stablefords but the championship is a medal.

Scoring reflected the conditions, with only three players beating par - Terry Jasper, Mike Colban and Graham Evans. The winner was one of the early starters, veteran long-time member Terry Jasper, who used his course knowledge to good effect to record a nett 68 before a long wait in the clubhouse to see if his score was surpassed.

Despite the best efforts of Colban and Evans, who both returned 69s, no-one else threatened Jasper’s lead.

Dave Tilley and Brian Brockhurst finished with creditable 71s, while eight players recorded 72, including Dave Lucking and Dave Hirons, both off six handicaps, who recorded the lowest gross scores of the day.

Twos were scored by Paul Owen, Wally Mitchell, Mick Fillary , Peter Clarke and Dave Hirons, who scored two of them.

BOGNOR

There were 35 entrants for the 2012 winners and runners-up competition at Bognor.

Dave Grover was the winner with a nett score of 62 on countback from Adam Badman. Third was Phil Wood with 67 on countback from Roy Tidy and John Wilson.

The seniors won their home match against Sandown and Shanklin 4½-3½. The best win of the day was by Gary Steventon, captain on this occasion, and Dennis Burke, who beat the present and past captains of the visitors 5&4. With the match score at 3½-3½ the game was won on the last hole by Peter Collins and Ron Stevens.

Other scores: R Selway & T Wells won 1 up, J Owen & Mike Wadley lost 2 & 1, C Millett & Paul Black lost 1 down, R Hedge & H Diaper won 1 up, V Ward & F Hodder lost 2 & 1, B Wolstencroft & B Appleby halved.

The seniors’ programme of 36 matches this year was affected by periods of poor weather. In particular this resulted in both the home and away games against Ifield being played during the past month in soggy conditions. The home match was lost 4½-3½.

Scores: D Turner & H Diaper lost 2&1, R Hedge & A Delves lost 4&3, R Braham & D Hollis halved, T Till & J Barker lost 3&1, G Steventon & D Burke halved, R Selway & V Ward halved, F Hodder & P Black won 3&1, P Collins & J Woodhead won 1 up.

The match at Ifield was lost 5–3.

It has been a very successful year for the seniors. Their outstanding month was July when they won six of their seven matches, five of which were away.

Of the 33 games games played 19 were won and one halved. Some 59 Seniors have represented the club in these matches.

On a damp, drizzly day, 52 ladies played in the Daily Mail and Club Foursomes competition.

The winning qualifiers for the national Daily Mail Foursomes competition were Suzanne Taylor and Sian Southerton with 35 points. In the new year they will learn who they will play in the next round.

Second with 33 points were Georgina McCormack and Nicola Holton, third on 31 was Lyn Miller and Ann Bushell, fourth on countback Bridget Samuels and June Salt and fifth on countback Sue Doughty and Barbara Evans.

CHICHESTER

Chichester’s Saturday ladies played a qualifying stableford. The winner with 39 points was Mary-Lou, which meant a cut in handicap to 12. Second was Caroline Hawkes with 38 and a close third was Rebecca Curd with 37.

Tuesday featured the monthly medal on the Tower course. In-form Caroline Hawkes won with a nett 74. Second was new member Jennifer Sherwood with 76 on countback and third was Joan Bramer.

The Saturday medal again saw Caroline Hawkes playing well. Winner Lisa Mitchelmore won with nett 72. Caroline was second with 73. Lisa and Caroline scored the lowest gross for the day - 83. Third was Lesley Downs with nett 78.

The weather for Tuesday’s Stableford was unfavourable for high scoring. But on the dismal day the winner with 35 points was Terry Payne. Second on countback with 35 was Lisa Jackson and third was Jeannie Blackman.

SELSEY

The overall result of club matches played in 2012 by the veterans’ section of Selsey GClub was seven wins, eight losses and one halved game.

This was an improvement on last year and the campaign included Selsey winning back, for the first time in 11 years, the Millennium Plate from Southsea Golf Club.

To celebrate the end of the season, players who have competed in club matches play a friendly competition in teams of four, with the best three scores (Stableford points) for each hole counting towards the total score for each team.

The winning team this year was Paul Boughton, John Kirkby, John Williamson and Dave Winter with 108 points.

AVISFORD PARK

The midweek medal was won by Brian Comber with a nett 69. The Saturday Stableford winner was Mike Jones with 38 points.

The STM Foursomes competition winners were Chris Wall and Roger Boorer with 40 points and in second place were Carl Corbin & Stephen Porter with 38. Nearest the pins were won by David Rudman on the 13th and Martin Gill on the 14th.

The senior Stableford competition winners were Ernie Rivett in division one with 37 points and Victor Fowler in division two with 40.
