Because of coronavirus this was the first of the Sussex County Ladies golf competitions to be played this year and attracted 34 clubs with a total of 68 ladies playing on the day.

Karen Harman and Pam Johnston were the winners. Pam scored an incredible 42 Stableford points which added to Karen’s very impressive 35 points, totalled 77 points for the Crowborough team.

Their score was a remarkable six shots ahead of Bognor Regis ladies, who were the runners-up with 71 points. This was a fantastic achievement for both ladies considering that neither of them had played the course previously.

The Jerdein Memorial Salver is a legacy left by Linda Jerdein, who had a very long history within the ladies’ section of Crowborough Beacon Golf Club. She was Lady Captain five times between 1946 and 1952. She was also Sussex Ladies county champion in 1949 and 1950 and was selected as captain of the ladies’ county team in 1951.

The Salver was first played at Crowborough as an inter-club competition in 1955 a year after Linda Jerdein died at the very young age of 49.

This was the one and only year that Crowborough actually won the Salver, so to win it again this year after such a long time is a great honour for the club’s ladies and a fitting tribute to such a formidable Crowborough lady member.

Because of the continuing Covid-19 restrictions there was no presentation on the day. This is due to take place at the Sussex County Ladies annual meeting in November, when Karen and Pam will be presented with the salver and they can proudly bring it back home to Crowborough.
