Great results for Chichester's multi marvels

In the final championship events of the 2011 track and field season, Chichester's multi-eventers have produced fine performances.

Three stars had gained selection to the English Schools finals at Exeter and two younger athletes showed promise in the Sussex Championships at Sutton.

At Exeter, Izzie Brown and Nathalie Godden were part of the three-competitor Sussex team in the intermediate girls’ age group and picked up bronze in poor conditions.

Godden, a student at St Philip Howard School, battled bravely against an ankle injury to finish 14th with 3,623 points in a field of nearly 40 of the best heptathletes in the country.

Brown finished in an outstanding fifth place, ending with a season’s best in the 800m to beat her closest rival by six points in breaking the 4,000pt barrier.

Earlier the Chichester High School pupil had recorded a best throw in the javelin and posted creditable performances in 200m, shot and hurdles.

Jamie Moore of The Regis School had earned his place through a fine performance in regional qualifying even though the Sussex team failed to make it to the finals, having suffered an injury to one of the team. In only his third decathlon Moore got off to a flyer with a wind-assisted personal best of 11.65sec in the 100m followed by bests in shot and discus, while his high jump, javelin, hurdles and pole vault were solid too.

Moore was able to use his experience as a former middle-distance runner in a battling display in the 1,500m to finish fifth out of 25 competitors with a new best points total of 5,599.

With another year in the age group, Moore can look forward to a promising future.

Two newcomers to multi-event competition, Jessica Breach and Abby Moss, were in action in the Sussex pentathlon championships.

Breach, in her third competition in this event, managed a personal-best 13.05sec in the hurdles followed by a 1.33m high jump and was delighted to finish with 2,288 points for fourth place in the under-15s.

Abby Moss achieved the same position in the under-13s in her first multi-event competition. Notching up an impressive personal best of 4.32m in the long jump, Moss finished with an impressive 800m in 2.46min to leave her fourth with 1,912 points, just ten points off bronze.

Chichester Runners are looking forward to winter team competitions, which kick off this weekend at Aldershot with the South of England road relays, in which the club will be involved in six junior races.

The following Saturday sees the start of the cross-country season with the Goodwood relays incorporating the Sussex championships. James Baker looks in fine early-season form after his 25min 25sec clocking in the Victory 5 in Portsmouth last weekend.
