On the day he lifted the Dick Hern Trophy for an amazing fourth year in a row, it was inevitable Richard Hannon would send at least one winner to post.

After being presented with the track’s top trainers’ trophy, which he has now held since 2008, the Wiltshire handler saw stable jockey Richard Hughes ride 11/4 favourite Poetic Lord to victory in the European Breeders’ Fund Nursery.

It was Hannon’s 20th course victory of 2011 - Hughes’ 21st.

Later Hannon made it 21 - the equivalent of one winner at every Goodwood meeting this season - when Byrony (16/1) was first past the post under Kieran O’Neill in the Goodwood Racehorse Owners Group Stakes Handicap (Div II).

The card began with the annual opportunity for jump jockeys to sample the unique and challenging Goodwood course in the Fornells Alderbrook Stakes (Handicap).

Colin Bolger came home first on 13/2 shot Epsom Salts for trainer Pat Phelan.

Richard Kingscote took the Goodwood Aero Club Stakes (Handicap) on Tom Dascombe-trained Gentle Lord (11/1) while the biggest priced winner of the day - and one of the biggest in a long time at Goodwood - was Fillionaire, ridden by Sam Hitchott and going off at 40/1 in the Greene King IPA Median Auction Maiden Stakes. The horse is trained by Mick Channon - the last before Hannon to win the Dick Hern Trophy.

Sussex trainer John Dunlop had success in the British Stallion Studs Supporting British Racing EBF Maiden Stakes as Richard Hills rode 11/4 favourite Aazif to a win. That was to be the first leg of a double for the veteran Arundel handler.

The Goodwood Racehorse Owners Group Stakes Handicap (Div I) went to Nazreef (8/1) ridden by Darryll Holland and trained by Hughie Morrison.

The final race of the 2011 season on the Downs, the Goodwood Hotel Stakes Handicap, went to Ian Mongan on Knightly Escapade (14/1), trained by Dunlop.

This website’s tips came up with three of the winners - Epsom Salts, Poetic Lord and Aazif - plus a 12/1 second place and a third.
