Hockey: Chichester share spoils at Fareham

Chichester were pleasded to make a much shorter away trip than usual - and were pleased to come home with a point.

Chichester started sluggishly, which enabled Fareham to dictate the early play.

Fareham were allowed to play the ball around comfortably with little pressure applied by Chichester.

The home side took a deserved lead on five minutes through a well-converted flick from a penalty corner.

As the half went on Chichester found their way into the match and some quick attacking moves from Chichester started to open up the Fareham midfield and backline but Chichester were unable to apply the finishing touch.

Five minutes before the break, Chichester levelled the scoring through a fantastic deflection from Ollie Baxter after a cross on the right.

After the break Chichester came out of the blocks quickly and dominated - and but for some poor decision-making in the opposition D and some good goalkeeping, Chichester should have put the game to bed.

On 54 minutes a determined Alex Thakore forced his way through the Fareham defence and passed to Baxter to tap into an empty goal for his and Chichester’s second.

Ten minutes later Chichester paid the price for switching off and allowing an easy pass into their own D. The ball found its way to the Fareham captain Alex Boxwell and he deflected it into the net, levelling the score.

Chichester pressed forward late in the game and again created chances but were unable to convert them.

Chi paid the price for not seeing the game out when in control and the team came off feeling they had lost the game.

Chichester have now won one, drawn one and lost one in their opening three league games. Performances are improving, which is encouraging.

They have this weekend off as their opposition are competing in European competition.

Chichester’s next fixture is away to Bath on October 16.

Chichester Ladies 3 Crawley 0

Newly-promoted Crawley are a team who have been together for a number of years - but with home advantage, Chichester came out of the blocks strongly.

A solid defensive line was held by Sally Bradley, Amy Chaplin, Mirriam Sparshott and Hattemore.

The first goal came after nice team work between Patti Hyla, Lottie Greenlees and Meg Goring earned a short corner. Verena Sambel and Hyla worked it nicely to trick the opposition and it was 1-0 to Chichester.

Sambel had a reverse shot saved by the keeper and cleared off the pads.

Opportunities kept coming and Hyla took the ball around Crawley players, on to reverse stick and scored.

Holly Giles and Peake set up Healey to make it 3-0.

The second half was dominated by Chichester but Crawley’s defensive line held strong.

Chichester looked like a strong, fit team and are second in the league on points difference which gives the girls a lot of confidence to go into the visit to big rivals Lewes this weekend.

Chichester Centurions 0 Chichester Ladies 2nds 4

Chichester ladies travelled all of a mile for this away game - at the univeristy.

Chichester had a strong side but were carrying a few injuries. Young guns Rachel Trent and Jess Gleeson made early progress into the opposition half.

The passing was good and eventually Sarah Jessop scored from a penalty corner.

Centurions were resilient and defended well. Vicky Oliver-Catt in defence for Chichester made some excellent tackles and Claire Young in goal stopped the home side scoring.

Chi’s second came from Jessop after Sarah Pack made a great run down the right.

Gleeson got on the scoresheet too and Trent gave Centurions something to think about every time she went forward. New player Maddy Wright also did well. Jessop got her hat-trick goal with a little help from the home side.

Chichester were pleased to come away with the three points.

Chichester 2nds 2 Haslemere 2

Chichester were 1-0 down within five minutes but they quickly replied when Alex Pendle cleaned up on a short corner.

Half-time saw Chi 2-1 down but Haslemere went down to ten men and James Stemp slid in at the back post after good work from Charlie Gibbons to bring the score to 2-2 just before the final whistle blew.

Chichester Ladies 3rds 0 East Grinstead Ladies 4ths 1

These were evenly-matched teams despite the result.

Chichester held their game together with great teamwork and excellent passing. After 35 minutes of hard defensive play the score was 0-0.

East Grinstead’s efforts eventually paid off as they were able to make contact with the backboard with only ten minutes left.

Chichester fought back with some fantastic shots on goal but couldn’t score.
