It would be a sin not to congratulate Cardinals

Chichester Cardinals had a successful season and can look forward to starting 2011-12 in division four of the Sussex League.

The squad’s age range is 17 to 70 and they came together superbly.

The first game saw a good home win but sadly the loss of top scorer S Dean to injury was a setback.

Autumn brought six wins and only two losees and G Grant volunteered to go in goal when necessary - and kept brilliantly. A special mention goes to the whole defence. The team had the third best defensive record in all the Sussex Open leagues.

The new year started with a draw and after that, the team improved, with good passing and teamwork on show. The midfield worked tirelessly to keep the team on top.

CARDINALS: Austin, Ball, Grant, Bonham, Longden, Durrant, Ross, Coppin, M McCartain, Prescott, Stevens, Curtiss-Botting, Lewes, Dean, White, R McCartain, A McCartain, Renwick, Finn.

Second-placed Chichester’s season drew to an end with a hard-fought draw against the leaders.

Both teams sought to establish midfield dominance without getting on top. Oxted’s skills on the ball showed why they have been in contention all season and they opening the scoring in the first half.

This sparked Chichester into life and they created a number of chances before the returning Futcher struck from a penalty corner.

Oxted sneaked ahead after an error in defence saw their forward one-on-one with Alder in the Chichester goal and slotting calmly home.

The second half was cagey with more play in the Oxted half but no final product, despite the efforts of Chichester’s player of the season, Clark, who linked with O’Dell and Lowther. It looked like Chichester’s efforts would go unrewarded until a tactical switch saw Futcher playing further up the pitch and scoring.

While a draw was a fair result, it did not help either team’s cause – Chichester finishing third and Oxted battling for top spot with Crowborough.
