It’s a Chichester one-two in Portsmouth 5k series

Chichester athlete Peter Concannon turned the tables on his club-mate James Baker as the duo finished first and second in the Lakeside 5k.

The positions were reversed from the opening race of the series last month.

Concannon took the victory in 15min 41sec, while Baker had to be content with second (15.48).

Aldershot’s Lauren Hall was first lady (17.35) but Chichester’s Jane Harrop was first over-50 woman and was 54th overall.

It was a record-breaking day for Chichester Runners & AC when the popular Trundle Hill 10k off-road race attracted more than 450 runners for the first time in its 25-year history.

With multiple winner James Baker away defending his title in the Lakeside series at Portsmouth, the iRun pairing of James Ellis and Dan Bailey led the field along the picturesque Lavant Valley, right up to a circuit of the top of the Trundle and back to Lavant again in under 40 minutes.

Third was Denmead’s Julian Manning, who ran stride for stride with Paula Radcliffe in the latter stages of this year’s London Marathon.

Chichester had success in the women’s race with Sarah Fenmor Collins having her best run since the birth of her third child to finish well clear of the rest and high up in the overall placings.

In the junior one-mile race held just before the main event, there was success for Chichester High School pupil Alex Halfacree running for Arunners. But he was followed home by a pack of promising juniors from Chichester Runners & AC.

Harry Sage led the way followed by Benedict Robinson, Luke Campbell, Jeremy Sharp, Leo Stallard, Ned Potter and JJ Staples.

Ranking as the first-ever club promotion put on by Chichester Runners, the Midsummer five-mile road race takes place next Thursday, starting from its usual venue at Lavant Village Hall.

The runners head out along the Lavant straight to the Goodwood motor-racing circuit where they do exactly one 2.35-mile lap before retracing their steps to finish at Lavant.

At the time of going to press, organisers are still accepting last-minute entries with forms available either from the Chichester Runners website or on the club noticeboard at Westgate Leisure.
