It's a washout '“ rain puts paid to mid-week Fontwell meeting

THE downpours which wiped out much of last weekend's sporting programme across Sussex claimed a midweek victim too - yesterday's scheduled jump-racing meeting at Fontwell Park.

an early end to hopes of getting the meeting on.

It was a blow for Fontwell, who had attracted a decent number of entries for the card ahead of the cancellation.

The abandonment leaves the track with just two more meetings in this calendar year – another midweek card on Tuesday, December 11, followed by their big Boxing Day fixture.

Fontwell Park general manager Tracy Skinner has predicted a bumper crowd for the festive fixture - with staff hoping they might even beat last year’s crowd figure, which was itself the highest seen for years at the track.

Skinner said: “We’re hoping for a crowd similar in size to last year’s bumper attendance of 8,000.

“The phones are going mad now with people wanting to book their place for Boxing Day. I think they’re a mixture of people who came last year and others who heard about how much fun it was.”

Some hospitality areas have already sold out for Boxing Day and anyone thinking of going is advised to book well in advance by phoning 01243 543335 or going online to www.fontwellpark.co.uk

The day will include a high-standard programme of races and plenty of Christmas-related fun for all the family, including a visit from Father Christmas.

Officials are also looking ahead to 2013, when they will again host a bumper set of 24 fixtures.

Skinner revealed an offer of reduced membership fees for the year was proving popular. “We’re currently offering annual membership at Fontwell Park for 2013 for just £199,” she said. “That price will go up on December 11 and if you buy now, you’ll also get into this year’s remaining fixtures.”
