Jim and Jack pair up for West Sussex bowls title

WEST SUSSEX’s county pairs championship attracted 39 pairs to the Six Villages Sports Centre at Westergate.

After the round-robin stages, the last 16 featured teams from Infinity, Bognor, Crablands, Ashington, Midhurst, Horley, Lavant, The Martlets, Southbourne, Upper Beeding and Mannings Heath.

In the quarter-finals Infinity A faced Infinity B and in a close game Alice Rackley and Dan Blackman just beat Ben Haulkham and Chris Page 7-5.

The Ashington team of Yvonne Tolley and Matt Allen beat Horley’s Martin Locke 6-3; The Martlets’ Jim Noton and Jack Rollings comfortably beat Horley’s David File 11-1, and Upper Beeding’s Eric Jackson and Ron Booty beat Mannings Heath’s John Burton-Gow 10-1. In one semi-final, Ashington played excellent bowls to run out winners 12-3 over Infinity. The other semi-final was a much closer affair with The Martlets just taking it 6-5 over Upper Beeding.

The final saw some top-quality bowling by both teams with Noton and Rollngs just pulling ahead towards the end and holding on in the last end to win 6-5 in one of the best finals for many years.

ARUN

Arun Ladies 146 Egham Ladies 71

Egham ladies visited Arun for a friendly against Arun ladies. Although the game was a bid one-sided, it was enjoyed by everyone.

Arun ladies beat Eastbourne in the Masons competition. One rink travelled to Eastbourne and one played at Arun.

It was a very competitive game and eventually Arun won. They will play Bournemouth in the next round.

The home team, comprising Diana Mitchell, Bridget Collins, Betty Spicer and April Janman, won 38-13. Away from home, Chris Hobbs, Margaret Phillips, Shirley Hart and Denise Latter lost 22-17.

Arun travelled to Egham for a friendly which is always well-attended.

Arun entertained Langney in a home friendly. Langney started strongly and at half-time it could have gone either way, but Arun won on the day.

The Colin Knight Trophy is a popular annual event at Arun. Colin was a hugely-respected Arun member and bowlers are always pleased to play in an avent deciated to him.

First place went to ‘Team W’ – Ricky Corkett, Lyn Carthew and John Edwards – with seven points. Second were Team S – Barry Horsley, Joan Whetstone and John Smith with six; third were Team L – Robert Pearson, Keith Hellyer and Jane Taylor.

* Arun are holding an open day on Saturday, January 31.

The club will be open from 10am until 8pm to give as many people as possible a chance to give bowling a try.

Arun are a friendly club who cater for people of all ages and abilities. Members will give instruction or coaching for beginners or the more experienced bowler.

Once you join, there is a chance to play club league games, county league games, competitions, get coaching and practise.

Lavant Blue, away to Bognor Goodwoods Silver, had an excellent result.

On mat one, Blue were six shots adrift at end 13 but took six of the last eight ends to win by just one shot.

On mat two, Blue were ten shots up at end nine. Silver rallied but lost by just two shots. Both games were won on the last end.

The friendly went to Goodwoods, who came from behind.

Lavant Green, playing at home to Norfolk Cubs, lost the first two ends but settled quickly, pulling ahead for a solid win.

On mat two, Green could muster only a team of three, offering little resistance, Cubs scoring well to secure a win.

The match score was very close, Cubs winning 37-36.

The Martin Trophy, a yearly mixed singles competition, was held. Trophy first-round losers enter for the plate so all entrants get at least two chances for a win.

In the trophy semi-finals, John Simms beat Eileen Keane and Peter Whale beat Yvonne Squires. For the plate Jean Conway beat Peter Winter and Tony Bleach beat Peter Lee.

The scores in both finals suggest easy wins but they were well contested. Whale beat Simms to take the trophy 12-2 and Bleach beat Conway 11-2 for the plate. Presentations will be at the end-of-season club dinner.

NYETIMBER

Nyetimber Greens hosted Lavant Blue in a league match and took four points with a win on one mat and a loss on mat two. Nyetimber won overall by seven points.

Southbourne Rovers lost away to Walberton Blues in south-west zone division two of the West Sussex Winter League.

Walberton won on both mats although Southbourne were close on one mat until near to the end.

Southbourne Rangers lost away to Mannings Heath in division one of the West Sussex Winter League. Southbourne lost on both mats.
