Juniors are jubilant at Bognor - and silverware shows why

The main event was their annual open, for which there were 38 entries from 11 clubs from as far afield as Cottesmore, Lewes and Singing Hills.

Ages ranged from ten to 18 and there were 13 single figure players.

Scratch winner was Oliver Bradbury (Chichester), who plays off five, with a gross score of 71. Harry Bayley (Royal Ashdown) was second with 72 and third on 73 was Jordan Russell (Hill Barn).

The best nett score was 63 by George Bingham (Bognor) and second was his twin brother Scott (Bognor) on 65.

Five girls took part and the nett winner was Hayley MacKay (Bognor) on 66, with Jennifer Doughty (Bognor) on 71. Prizes were provided by Peter Lea.

The Bognor juniors have won through to the regional final of the Home Nations Club competition in October, having beaten Worthing 4-2 in the final of the West Sussex League.

Louis Harrison, the junior captain, lost one down, vice-captain Dan Hoare won 6&4, Jordan Vincent won two up, Tom Stoneham won 6&5, Ryan Maskell won 3&2, Matt Wood lost 2&1.

The juniors are also through to the semi-final of the John Bury Plate, having received a walkover from Slinfold.

The juniors have also been enthusiastically taking part in their own competitions.

The Shannick Medal was won by Jordan Vincent, playing off five, with a nett 65. Ryan Breach was second on 70 on count back from Matt Wood. Breach was also nearest the pin on the second, Vincent nearest on the fifth and Marcus Embleton on the tenth. Peter Cox was the sponsor.

The Pittam Trophy was won by Jake Stoneham, who plays off 25, with 46 points. Jack Taylor was second on 40 and Matt Wood third on 39. The over-28 handicaps winner was Fraser Gamblin with 44. Christine Pittam, whose husband was president of the club, sponsors this competition.

The Tartan Trophy, a scratch medal competition, was won by Jordan Vincent, handicap five, with a gross 71.

Runner-up was Marcus Embleton on 80 and Jack Taylor was third on 83. Embleton was the nett winner on 58, with Taylor second on 59 and Hayley MacKay third on 64. Winner of the over-28 handicaps was Gamblin with 34 points. Jake Stoneham was nearest the pin on the fifth.

Seventy-nine ladies competed in a Stableford and Stableford final.

Stableford final winner was June Salt, while the vets’ Stableford final winner was Dora Vaughan.

COWDRAY PARK

There are two cups to be won for the Californian, an 18-hole medal competition at Cowdray, for scratch and handicap. A total of 51 played.

Results: Scratch: 1 Steve White 71, 2 Stuart Probee 72, 3 Matt Hall 72. Handicap: 1 Roger Hyde nett 64, 2 Roger Murphy 64, 3 Robbie Hogg 64.

The Gooseberry is a popular three-ball Stableford in which a lady invites two gents to play and the best two scores count. This year there was a good turnout of 20 teams.

Results: 1 Lena Cullen, Ken Cullen & Justin Thorpe 90, 2 Terry Hughes, Chris Bowles & Dave Balfour 85, 3 Lil Cummins, & Phil & Chris Cummins 82.

With playing conditions vastly improved, Cowdray Park seniors entertained the Hindhead Stags, seeking to reverse a 5½-2½ loss at Hindhead.

Superbly led by match manager David Laver and partner Paul Berry, who won 4&3, the home side were inspired and proceeded to win the next five matches to establish an unassailable lead.

The highlight of the first match came from Laver, who sent his third shot on the par-four fourth through the back of the green, then promptly chipped back, with the ball rattling the pin and dropping in the hole for a par.

The opposition never fully recovered and the Cowdray pair went on for a comfortable win.

Outstanding results for Cowdray came from Alan Robinson and Robert Strick (5&4) and Allen Sibley and David Wickham (6&5), during which Wickham achieved an eagle on the 18th.

This was the home side’s 20th home win from 21 matches.

Cowdray Park seniors travelled to Cottesmore to be met by early-morning mist, which delayed proceedings.

Cowdray suffered a reverse in the first match, with match manager Bill Brownlee and Roger Poat losing 4&3. Match two restored parity when John Doran and Dave Tilley won 5&4. The largest winning margin of the day, 7&6, came from John Smith and Jim Booth.

Cowdray seized the lead in the penultimate match through Dave Lucking and Graham Evans, but the final match went to the home side to level matters at 4-4.

The weather finally relented for Cowdray Park seniors as the sun shone and there was no sign of rain for their monthly Stableford. The 84 seniors flourished under the drier conditions.

Scores in the upper 30s were prevalent before Terry Moran returned the first 40 of the day.

His lead lasted barely half an hour before veteran senior Robin West returned 42. John Kitchener claimed second spot with 41 points.

Near the end of the field, a relative newcomer to the seniors, Paul Tadhunter, was making progress through the field and duly returned a score of 41 and relegated Kitchener to third on countback. Tony Castley made a welcome return from illness and injury to record his best competitive score of the year, 36 points.

Very little movement was made in the top ten of the Carter Trophy, with only the consistent Cliff Davis and Graham Evans making any progress. Davis recorded his fifth qualifying score of the year.

A sum of £138 was raised for the Help for Heroes.

AVISFORD PARK

In the senior Stableford, the winner of the first division was Brian Comber with 36 points and in division two it was Roger Lewis with 35.

In the midweek Stableford, the winner was Brian Comber with 36 points.

In the club medal, the winner of division one was Andrew Cooke with nett 64 and in division two with a nett 65 it was Philip Pye.

The yearly Chris Cullen/Gary Wilson trophy competition was played.

Winner of the Chris Cullen trophy was Chris Wall with 39 points and the Gary Wilson trophy went to Trevor Bundy with 36.

Nearest-the-pin winners were Ian Hardwell on the second, Vinny Lampitt on the 13th and Michael Mills on the 18th.
