Sean Levey hadn’t won a race at Goodwood before Sunday’s meeting - now he’s celebrating a phenomenal 1,386/1 treble.
The rookie rider, in his first year in the saddle in Britain, kicked off his afternoon to remember by guiding Freddy Q - tipped on this website - to victory by a neck at 14/1 in the Nick Brooks Stakes for Richard Hannon.
Two races later, in the goodwood.com Bonus Stakes, he notched a half-length win on the John Bridger-trained Starwatch, which went off at 9/1.
Then in the last, the Goodwood Revival 16-18th September Bonus Stakes, he completed the treble on Tagula Night, trained by Walter Swinburn, at 11/1.
The second meeting of Goodwood’s latest weekend double-header began with Stephen Craine on 5/1 shot Cunning Act winning the Racing UK On Sky 432 Bonus Stakes.
Elswhere, Mark Coumbe took the TurfTV Bonus Stakes with Ramona Chase, also 5/1, Adam Beschizza won comfortably on 13/2 contender Tariq Too in the TurfTV For Betting Shops Bonus Stakes and Tadhg O’Shea brought home joint 7/2 favourite Tameen for Arundel trainer John Dunlop in the Goodwood Racehorse Owners’ Group Stakes. Fittingly, Dunlop also trains the owners’ group’s horses.
That victory was Dunlop’s seventh of the season at Goodwood and took him into second place in the course’s top trainers’ tables - but unless he wins just about every race at the track’s final two meetings of the year, on September 21 and October 9, he won’t stop Hannon taking the Dick Hern Trophy for an incredible fourth straight year.
Hannon’s sole win on Sunday took his tally to 18 - the same number that Richard Hughes has as he leads Goodwood’s top jockey leaderboard for 2011.
Hannon is likely to be presented with the Dick Hern Trophy at Goodwood’s next meeting on Wednesday week.
