Arun bowlers are too strong for Sussex visitors

Arun entertained the Sussex County Bowling Association for a six-rink annual men’s fixture. Arun won on four rinks and lost on two to win by 78 shots - the score 159-81.

Arun’s excellent run in the national Egham Trophy competition ended in the Sussex area zone final in a 79-66 loss to Eastbourne.

Arun’s home rink, skippered by Derek Leach, remained unbeaten through four rounds.

Against a very strong Atherley team from Hampshire, Arun lost in the first round of the London Southern Counties Shield.

In the Sussex League, Arun entertained Falaise from East Sussex and notched up a 58-shot win, winning on five rinks to take ten valuable league points.

This was another good win for Arun ladies in the Vivienne Trophy.

Arun won on three out of four rinks and by 28 shots.

Arun ladies were disappointed to lose in the Mason’s Trophy by nine shots.

Scores: L Curtis, S Stocker, G Conley, C Hursley lost 27-14; D Latter, I Brooker, J Taffurelli, M Richards won 22-18.


Golds played Greens in a SW division-two league game and Golds took all six points after winning on two mats. Golds also won on the friendly mat 29-9.

Nyetimber played Bury Bears in a triples friendly. Bury won on two mats but the match was drawn 48-48. On the friendly mat, Nyetimber won by 17 shots.


Lavant Blue visited Crablands Bitterns and after nine ends Tony Boxall’s team were 10-8 down. Crablands surged on, leaving Blue 24-8 shots down after 16 ends. Blue scored well, losing the game by only five shots.

Peter Massey’s team found themselves 8-0 down after four ends, but then scored heavily, while Bitterns laboured to score only eight more shots, Blue winning 25-16.

It ended 45-41 to Blue for two bonus points.

The friendly saw Peter Winter’s team scoring three shots on the last end to win.

Lavant Red could not settle away to The Martlets. Peter Winter’s team, from being 6-6 at eight ends, were 17-7 down after a poor phase. Both teams took ten shots apiece so Red lost out.

Peter Whale’s team took only a few low-scoring ends, battled well but could not prevent steady scoring against them.

Both Red teams scored three shots to win the last ends.

The friendly saw Lavant lose by nine shots.

Goodwood Greens found their visitors from Ashington in very good form and lost all six points.

Brenda Jones’ team of Joan Simmons, Grace Roope and Janet Hanson lost 28-10 while Greens were a player short on the other mat and paid the penalty, despite Edna Cooke, Eric Jones and Brian Mills putting up a creditable performance.

However, Ashington scored a hot-shot on end 18 and the Greens lost 29-21 for an overall defeat of 57-31.


Fittleworth enjoyed a 53-49 friendly win over Wisborough Green, winning on one mat and losing on the other.

Against Lavant Blue, Fittleworth lost on one mat and drew the other to go down 45-36.

Crablands Bitterns played at home to Ashington Owls but suffered a defeat on both league mats, losing 41-30.
