Bowls: Arun ladies one step away from national title

Arun ladies beat Camberley IBC 86-64 in the semi-final of the Vivienne national competition. They now look forward to the final at Northampton

Arun ladies played a friendly against Wealden IBC and won 163-101.

Arun entertained Pagland BC in a good friendly-spirited match and it was very even at the halfway stage. Arun lost on three rinks but won overall by 15 points.

Falaise 137 Arun 100

Arun travelled to Falaise in Hastings for a league match - one of there longest journeys. Although Arun lost overall they won on half the rinks - but Falaise stroked away to win the match. Arun took three points, Falaise eight.

Goodwoods Silvers took all six points from the return match with unbeaten Nyetimber Gold to avenge their defeat in the first match.

D Dray, M Williams, P Smith and L Dray (skip) beat A Crew, D Kirby, T Mussell and G Booker (skip) won 25-14 after winning the last six ends.

B Williams, D Lovell, J Harbut and J Hanson (skip) beat L Griffiths, J Leak, B Crew and I Hathaway (skip) 19-15 after a much closer match 19-15, despite losing five shots on the last two ends. The overall score was 44-29.

Silvers also won the friendly mat, with R Wiedenhoeft, B Baines, G King and F Kaucher (skip) beating S Lyon, P Mussell, B Boiling and R Steven 20-11.

Goodwoods Greens, at home to Clapham & Patching, were unable to overcome their visitors, despite drawing on one mat.

Greens team of Derek Fair, Edna Cook, Freddie Kaucher and Brian Mills trailed throughout, and went into the last end four shots down. In a remarkable finish, they took four shots to bring the sides level on 21-21.

On mat two they fielded one of their strongest teams - Eric Jones, Mary Fair, Marlene Steel and Brenda Jones - but could not recover from a poor start conceding seven shots on the second end. The final score was 29-11 with an overall score of 50-32. Greens took two points, Clapham four.

Goodwoods Silvers managed to continue their winning run by beating Nyetimber Greens four points to two.

Silvers’ D Dray, M Williams, P Smith and L Dray went from 8-6 to 21-6 up against Nyetimber’s C Foot, P Williams, J Chaplin and R Hatch to win 28-15.

S Hayter, D Lovell, J Harbut and J Hanson could not recover from being 15-0 down after seven ends and eventually lost 29-19 to D Merritt, M Hatch, B Boiling and A Foot. This resulted in an overall score of 47-44 to give Silvers a 4-2 points win.

They also won the friendly mat - J Hayter, B Baines, D Fair and F Kaucher beating S Ridgewell, E Morgan, J Leak and A Foot 19-16.


Lavant Blue lost 49-27 at Southbourne and lost at home to the same opposition 51 - 38 but won the friendly 25 - 13.

At home to Bognor Goodwoods Silver, Lavant Green lost 40-32 and lost the friendly 29-9.

Lavant Green faced Arundel at home and mat one were 14-1 down after five ends and lost the game by 31 shots. Mat lost 27 - 10. The friendly mat won by nine shots.

Lavant Blue visited Crablands Bitterns and on mat one, Blue upped their scoring rate while Bitterns were kept to one-shot ends, Blue winning by 11 shots.

Mat two saw Blue struggling to make up for a poor start, being eight shots down at 11 ends. Bitterns kept up their scoring rate winning by 12 shots. Blue lost the match by one shot. only gaining two points. The friendly went Bitterns’ way including a hotshot to win by 16 shots.

Donnington made their way through flooded roads to Hunston for a friendly. They came away having been beaten 73-34.

Mat one was all square after 18 ends, but Donnington dropped three shots on the last three ends and lost by nine shots.

The other two mats both scraped into double figures. Tea followed and Hunston were thanked for their hospitality by Les Stewart, the non-playing captain.


Away to Lavant Red, Fittleworth won on one mat but lost on the other. Lavant took four points with an overall win of 52-32.
