CHICHESTER Bowmen hope a series of high-profile events this year will attract new people to the sport of archery.

The club have had a range at Oaklands Park since 1955, having been formed in response to a letter in the Chichester Observer asking for anyone interested in forming an archery club to contact a Mr Pope.

The first shoot was held in May 1955 and the club moved to the present location alongside the Festival Theatre in 1969.

They have more than 90 active members who shoot outdoors throughout the year and indoors at the Newell Centre in Tozer Way through the winter.

Club archers shoot for the Sussex team and there are archers with their eyes on the Olympics and Paralympics in Rio and beyond.

Archery has become increasingly popular following the London Olympics and having featured in The Hunger Games movies.

As a sport it is accessible to people of all ages - the club accept children aged from eight upwards - and physical ability, and the club have a mix of social archers as well as those taking part in competitions around the country.

If you are interested in trying archery, Chichester Bowmen are holding two ‘have-a-go’ sessions on Saturday, April 12 and Saturday, July 19.

And on Saturday, May 24, the Archery Big Weekend will offer a free opportunity for anyone to go along and try shooting under instruction. For those who enjoy any of these taster sessions, beginners courses will be held in May, June and August 2014.

You can find out more information and book on to any of these courses by visiting
