FISHBOURNE Flames secured a superb 36-27 victory over Oceans, a team who twice beat them last season.
The welcome return from injury of Lucy Morris and Bernie Twigg galvanised Flames from the outset and early goals put them ahead and engendered a sesne of confidence and purpose.
Flames maintained the lead throughout but though the result was never in doubt, Oceans were persistent and fought back at the beginning of each quarter.
The whole team played well but Bernie Twigg was named best player for a wholly-reliable show at wing attack, passing with pace and accuracy, and Tina Murden at wing defence was adept at finding space and passing down the line.
Christine Huggett again intercepted skilfully and she and Caroline Eames did well to stem the flow of goals from the talented Oceans’ shooters.
But it was at the Flames’ end that much of the best play happened with Laura Maddicks and Lucy Morris, ably supported by Julie Harding, scoring from every possible position – they were absolutely unstoppable.
FLAMES: Huggett, Eames, Maddicks, Morris, Twigg, Harding, Murden.
