Chichester Runners & AC athlete Nathalie Godden returned to major competition at the England Athletics indoor combined events championships in Sheffield.
After an absence of more than two years through injury - her last major meeting being at Exeter in September 2011 - this was treated as a first step back on the ladder.
Competing in the under-20 age group for the first time, she coped very well with the heights and spacings in the new 60m hurdles race to finish third in her race in a highly-creditable 9.96 seconds.
Her performances in the subsequent events - high hump (1.51m), shot (7.65m,) long jump (4.96m) and the 800m (2.47.60) - although understandably down on the marks she was achieving two years ago, gave her an overall points total of 2,766, which exceeded her predicted points tally target for the day by 46.
This was enough for her to finish 18th in the national championships and fifth in the south of England event which were being held within the meeting.
With further indoor individual competition coming over the next few weeks, this is very encouraging - and also augers well for the 2014 outdoor season.
