Bognor Tennis Club’s annual open ladies’ doubles tournament drew an entry of 14 pairs, including three from the home club.

The remaining competitors represented ten different clubs from across Sussex and beyond.

Each pair was placed in one of three round-robin groups and, by the end of the morning session, all had played a total of 27 or 28 games against the other couples in their group.

During the lunch break the results of the morning matches were analysed and, to increase the competitive element of the day, the four highest-performing pairs were placed into a top group.

As the afternoon session progressed these four pairs played seven games against the others in their group. With one of the other pairs having withdrawn, the remaining nine were divided into three performance-based groups and played nine games against the other two pairs.

The challenge for the afternoon was for each couple to beat the other pairs in their newly-created group and finish in a prizewinning position. Competition in the top group was determined and resolute, with all but one of the matches producing a 4-3 result.

Final scores in this group were, therefore, very close, with the winning pair from Wickwoods – Michelle Rothwell and Julia Alexander – just edging runners-up Helen Owen and Sarah Bollough, representing Howards.

Winners and runners-up of the other groups: Group 2 winners Ann Wilkinson and Carol Firth (Broadbridge Heath/Falmer); runners-up Joy Withers and Carol David (Angmering); Group 3 winners Virginia Carter and Edith Jeffery (Steyning/Sussex County); runners-up Kate Plumtree and Louise West (Bognor); Group 4 winners Jane Chase-Gardener and Rose Hodson (Wentworth); runners-up Sue Graham and Sue White (Wentworth).
