A thrilling match against the Solent Sluggers saw the Falcons take their second victory of the season at Portsmouth, 18-16 the final scoreline.

They swung away right from the get-go and smacked five runs on to the board in the first innings thanks to an emphatic grand slam by pitcher James Wheeler.

The Sluggers almost matched it with four runs of their own, but were silenced by expert outfield catches by Janice Morgan and Graham Boiling.

As the match progressed the Falcons quietened down at bat but managed to contain the Sluggers with good fielding from Tomas Geciauskas to David Morris at first base, while Jenny Dunn locked down second base with her dependable glove work.

Catcher Vicky Cathie kept the outfield organised and stamped her authority at the plate to rattle the Sluggers’ hitters. Ben Sawkins and debutant Liz Clark continued to hit well and by the end of the fourth, the game was tied.

The Falcons manager rang the changes and up stepped Jason Mercer, Alex Rigert and Geoff Lewis and the Falcons turned up the heat by bringing in a team record of six runs in the next innings.

Two runs ahead in the seventh, Zita Racz (pictured) capped off yet another most-valuable-player performance with lightning reactions to snag a backhand grounder and step on third base to end the game in style.
