Southampton crushed as university teams return to action

SIXTEEN University of Chichester teams enjoyed wins when BUCS action returned after a week’s break for many sports.

The men’s rugby first team turned their poor league form around with a crushing 41-7 win over Southampton University in the BUCS Trophy Cup.

For the men’s football second team, goals from Garrett and Horn secured a vital 2-1 away win over Brighton II.

The football club enjoyed wins for the men’s firsts, thirds and fifths.

The netball club enjoyed another clean sweep of wins with the third and fourth teams securing vital league wins in Surrey.

The seconds, in the newly-completed Sports Dome, defeated Portsmouth seconds 43-35, with the first team following in the dome edging a hard fought 46-34 encounter over Brunel II.

Elsewhere there were victories for men’s and women’s badminton, women’s football seconds, women’s tennis and men’s volleyball.

The women’s rugby team off the back of an historic 19-12 reading week win over Exeter University, were unfortunate to lose 29-24 at home to Oxford University in a thriller.

Last week ten University of Chichester sports teams progressed to the latter stages of the BUCS Cup.

Highlights included an 8-0 win for the women’s football seconds over Brighton seconds, a 12-0 away win for the men’s tennis team over Roehampton seconds and an emphatic 3-0 win for the men’s football seconds away to the Canterbury Christchurch first team.

Several other teams were in league action.

The men’s volleyball team secured a 3-0 home win over local rivals Sussex. The men’s rugby first team maintained their winning ways with a hard-fought 15-5 victory over Kings College Medics at Bishop Otter.

In football, the women’s first team, thanks to goals from Singh and Kempson, secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over Team Bath.
