Chichester’s second tie of the season brought a win away to B division newcomers Bexley – and ended with Chi still top of the table.
Leaders Chichester started strongly when Nele Gilis (world No39) defeated Coline Aumard (world 26) in five games with an amazing comeback from 2-0 down.
Miles Jenkins (Chichester) played Bexley captain Ben Ford. The first two games were shared before Jenkins started to use his short game and drag a tiring Ford forward. Jenkins won the third and fourth games 11-8, 11-6 to give Chichester a 2-0 lead.
Tim Vail followed on court to play Adam Auckland. From the outset, Vail was under pressure from the very mobile Auckland.
Vail did have several game points in the second game but could not take advantage of them and he eventually lost 11-4, 13-11, 11-4 – and Bexley had clawed one back.
Nathan Lake (world 74) played the current US national champion and world 45 Todd Harrity. This proved an enthralling encounter which ebbed and flowed.
Harrity played a good straight game and took the first game. Lake responded to Harrity’s style of play as the match wore on and Lake took the second and fourth games to set up the inevitable fifth-game decider. Once again it was neck and neck up 8-8 before Harrity’s superior straight game ensured an 11-8 win to take the match.
At 2-2 it was down to the wire in the final match between Paul Coll (world 32) and Bexley’s Ryan Cuskelly (world 13). Both players displayed incredible speed and skill.
Cuskelly took the first game before Coll upped his game and got into his stride and it seemed there wasn’t anything he could not pick up.
Coll took the next three games in brilliant fashion to give Chichester another fantastic victory to retain their position at the top.
The next match is at home to Coolhurst next Tuesday (November 22). Tickets: 01243 785664.
