Chichester Racquets & Fitness Club hosted a nine-and-under orange matchplay tennis event.

The grade-six mixed singles tournament was part of the club’s programme of winter-season tournaments.

The first stage had a round-robin format of four groups of three, with each match consisting of best-of-three tie-breaks to seven points. The best two qualifiers from each group then went into a compass draw format, with the remaining players into a consolation round-robin group.

Francesca Sweet collected the bronze medal by beating Thomas Bisatt 6-8, 9-7, 10-8. Silver went to Toby Toft, while James Pollard won gold- beating Toft 7-5, 7-4 in the main final.

The back draw final was won by Jonah Bryant, who beat Nora Khediri 7-4, 7-5.

Tournament organiser and referee Peter Cook said: “The standard of the entries was the highest I’ve seen for an orange-ball event. Every player competed extremely well, which made it difficult to predict who would win.

“It was pleasing and encouraging to see the four semi-finalists are all coached by the Chichester Tennis Academy at the club.”
