New downpours force Goodwood to abandon race meeting

Goodwood's planned Thursday afternoon meeting is off after another night of steady rain.

The course’s second card of the season fell victim to a fresh downpour of 19mm overnight.

Although the track was perfectly raceable yesterday, officials planned a 6.30am inspection because of the overnight weather forecast.

They had said the ground could have coped with another 5mm or so of rain - but 12mm was predicted and 19mm fell.

It’s a blow for the course, with a bumper set of eight races having been planned involving up to 80 runners in total.

Now they have a fortnight to pray for better weather ahead of their three-day May festival starting on Thursday 24.
