Nimble Neave gallops to Goodwood series win

Bosham's Toby Neave was a deserved winner of the annual Goodwood Gallops cycle races.

The victory was Toby’s third in a series which has run for over 20 years.

Neave (Team Connondale) was competing against 200-plus riders who all scored points in the event. Fields of up to 90 riders are not uncommon as opposition comes from across the south and south-east, as far afield as London.

The races are run as handicaps, which ensures the pace is extremely fast with average lap speeds of nearly 30mph. Points are awarded for finishing and sprints across the line each lap.

The 30-year-old Neave is known for his attacking style of riding and his determination, but ultimately it was consistency led to his success.

Tim Costello from Walderton took second rpresenting Chichester’s Southdown Velo-Geared Bikes, while Worthing-based Chris McNamara (Team Corley), current south-east road race champion, made it an all-West Sussex top three.

The Gallops take place on Goodwood’s motor-racing circuit every Tuesday throughout April to August.
