No Blaze of glory for Goodwood's new bonus prize

GOODWOOD'S new £10,000 speed bonus went unclaimed '“ but that didn't stop the event providing plenty of excitement.

In the last race of Sunday's card, Ocean Blaze, ridden by Chris Catlin, almost claimed the prize, but his winning time was a hundredth of a second slower than Kaolak, who had recorded the day's fastest time.

Catlin had steered Kaolak to victory by a nose in the eight-furlong vintageatgoodwood.com Stakes.

The John Ryan-trained three-year-old claimed victory in the innovative Speed Bonus Raceday, but the colt was ineligible for the prize so had not been registered for the windfall.

Speed bonus day came 24 hours after a bumper crowd of nearly 9,000 packed into Goodwood for the first card of the weekend in glorious late summer sun.

They witnessed another fantastic performance from Mac Love, who won the group three Select Stakes despite having been written off by everyone bar his trainer Stef Liddiard and jockey Micky Fenton.

Local race-goers get a double dose of action next week.

Goodwood stages a seven-race card starting at 2pm on Wednesday (Sept 23), while Fontwell hosts the same number of races the following day from 2.10pm.
