Ornstein celebrates a notable tennis treble at Chichester

Chichester Racquets & Fitness Club staged their annual closed veterans' tennis championships with more than 50 members taking part in the five main events.

Sue Foott retained her 2010 titles in the ladies’ singles and, with Sue Hine, the ladies’ doubles.

Chris Ornstien, a GB vets and an ITF seniors ranked player, made it his triple-crown day.

Ornstien, who had won at the 2011 South of England Vets Championships the week before the club competition started, began his campaign with the men’s singles final.

His opponent Alan Vawdrey, last year’s runner-up, battled strongly and retrieved well and it proved to be a keen contest. There were a lot of close games but Ornstien’s experienced matchplay enabled him to control and win the crucial points and he won 6-4, 6-4.

Foott played Gill Horsey in the ladies’ main event – a repeat of last year’s final. Horsey fought well against Foott’s strong serve and fierce forehand but Foott’s experience and control proved too strong and she won 6-3, 6-1.

Foott later returned to play and win the ladies’ doubles final with Hine – it ended 6-0, 6-2 against Debbie Draper and Horsey.

Ornstien and Vawdrey returned for their men’s doubles final. They played Fraser Poole and Nigel Warr, last year’s runners-up. The No1 seeds played confidently and took the title 6-0, 6-1.

Ornstien, Hine and Draper were back for the final match. Draper paired up with Bob Puncher to play Ornstien and Hine for the mixed doubles title.

An entertaining match concluded the day which Ornstien and Hine won 6-2, 6-4 – sealing the triple crown for Ornstien and another double for Hine.

Joan Jones, an honorary life member of the club, presented the prizes.
