Chichester colts thought London Scottish tie would be testing ... it wasn't

At senior level London Scottish are in the Championship – and there was an expectation their colts team would also play at a very high standard.

This was the first time Chichester’s under-19s had played together as a team and the players were ready for a tough test.

They were on the offensive from kick-off, No8 Mike Uta’s powerful runs giving an early glimpse of what was to come.

Within three minutes, scrum-half Jack Walker picked up from a ruck to open the scoring. Walker’s physical style was too much for Scottish and he soon set up a try for Freddie Sadler-Coppard before scoring a second himself.

The pack dominated the set scrums and open play while the front row of Joe Woods, Paddy Ryan and Evan Woodworth caused Scottish real discomfort. Woodworth scored his first try from a tap penalty.

Chichester’s forwards were faster to the breakdown and out-muscled the opposition in rucks and mauls. Open-side flanker Richard Foulkes ran with real pace to pierce the exiles’ defence and touch down for his first try.

Late in the first half Woodworth popped up on the end of the back-line for his second to make it 34-0.

Henry Anscombe, replacement scrum-half, danced past the Scottish defence until he was caught and offloaded to blind-side flanker Charlie Wallace, ready to complete the move and drive over the line. Centre Jack Knight benefitted from a glorious succession of passes to score under the posts.

Anscombe scored probably the best try after his sniping burst from a ruck was followed by three outrageous sidesteps to bewilder the Scottish backs.

Wing Oliver Wilson scored a cheeky try, following up his deft kick over his opposite number’s head. Wallace scored his second by stealing lineout ball on the five-metre line and diving over.

Foulkes stretched over for his second. Prop Curtis Boxall ran with power to score the penultimate score and the final try was scored by Walker, back on as centre, completing his hat-trick.

Two conversions by Wilson and six by Anscombe put the seal on an impressive team performance and the Colts will travel in the next round of the cup to face Richmond or London Welsh.
