Now Bognor know why Guersey are champions-in-waiting

Bognor entertained London two south west leaders Guernsey '“ and came across the best side they have played all season as the visitors showed why they are soon to be crowned champions with a 52-0 beating of their hosts.

Guernsey dominated nearly every facet of play as they built up a healthy lead in the first half with five well-worked tries, four of which were converted for an unassailable 33-point advantage.

Bognor did manage to pressure the visitors’ line on occasions, with man-of-the-match Jonny Lang an ever-present threat as he relentlessly went at the opposition and tried to take on the leaders single-headedly, but the Guernsey defence held strong.

Defence was going to be key and Bognor contrived to put in their worst performance, slipping off tackles all day as the powerful visitors ran riot in attack.

The second half was more even as the visitors seemed to ease up and tire, but Bognor were still unable to trouble the scoreboard.

Lang was instrumental in the best attack of the half as his vision and a perfect pass set debut-making winger Ollie Murray on a race down the touchline, only for a great last-ditch tackle to prevent the score.

If the home side are to take any positives, they need look no further than the lineout.

Jack Tomkins and the returning Tim Stickland competed well and disrupted most of the opposition ball all day, but this was never enough as Guernsey won the battle on the floor and turned the home side over at every opportunity.

Guernsey finished with a couple of breakaway tries to pass 50 as Bognor looked like a team already on their summer break, which surely can’t come quick enough.

Bognor have a week off before the last game of the season at Tottonians, but in a season of transition, with so many enthusiastic youngsters coming in from the colts, things will be in better shape next season as coach Karl Flynn prepares for pre-season.
