Six British golds are stunning for super skier Cooper

CHICHESTER skier Yasmin Cooper insists the success she found at the Delancey British National Alpine Ski Championships exceeded her wildest expectations after finishing the week with another gold medal on Sunday.

The women’s National Junior Championship giant slalom race was contested in Tignes, France on the final day of action and Cooper’s time of 2:20.22 minutes saw her take gold ahead of Lucinda Dilworth and Phoebe Long in the U18 category.

That was a sixth gold medal of the Championships for the 17-year-old, while she also added a pair of silvers and a bronze to her collection.

Such was Cooper’s success that she took the overall U18 and overall junior – contested by athletes under the age of 21 – titles but the teenager is adamant she never expected such glory.

“It feels amazing to get another win. I think I came to these Championships not really expecting much and I’ve really outdone what I thought I would get,” said Cooper.

“I’m absolutely ecstatic with the amount of podiums I have got and the way I have skied as well.

“It was really encouraging to get a couple of junior podiums, not just the U18. I didn’t really expect it, so to see myself rivalling older skiers felt really good.”

The Delancey British National Alpine Ski Championships run until April 1 and are the biggest event of the year for the British ski racing world – with Delancey as the principal sponsor for the sixth year running.

Cooper now has a decision to make as to whether she should race more events this season but whatever she decides, the youngster is already looking forward to the challenges that next season will bring.

“I’m quite tired and I feel like I’ve achieved everything I want to this season, so I’m just going to go back to my base in Austria, take a couple of days off and then assess if I want to do any more races,” added Cooper.

“I feel really confident, I’m already excited for summer training, so bring on next season!

“The offseason is critical I would say. I don’t think you can have a particularly good season unless you put a lot of hard work and dedication into your preseason. That’s what I try to focus on a lot.

“Next season will definitely be a step up in level, so I will look to challenge myself and see where it takes me.”
