Softball: Falcons show they’re Itchen for success

Chichester Falcons continued their season as victorious underdogs against a quality Itchen Knicks team.

In blustery conditions, the Falcons got firing early as Peter Martin smashed a two-run homer to put his team ahead in the first, and the Knicks were behind from that point.

Shortstop Dave Morris continued the onslaught in the second with his first of three doubles as rookie Ally Warr knocked in the run with a looping single to centre-field.

In the field, the Falcons were sturdy as ever. Pitcher Jason Mercer was seemingly unaffected by the wind as he knuckled his way through the frustrated Knicks hitters to keep the Falcons ahead.

Matt Tebb at left field strolled through several can-of-corn catches as Lucy Morris used any available parts of her body to mop up any loose grounders.

The Falcons continued to hit well through the middle innings as first baseman Yuka Wada earned two walks to load the bases for Dave Piesse to put up his second of three home runs.

Up 14-7 by the fifth, the Falcons would not let up for the Knicks as catcher Vicki Cathie worked hard to slap a tag on to the Knicks lead runner trying to steal home.

Arguably the play of the game came from Ally Warr who bravely stopped a hard-hit line drive in right field and gunned the ball back into the diamond to turn a would-be home run into just a single, much to the disbelief of the Knicks pitcher.

Ten runs up in the final innings, Emma Brown capped things off with her second double of the night and Jason Mercer kept his nerve to strike out the Knicks last batter to end the game 28-19.
