Sussex shooters celebrate silver medals

They finished second in the lightweight sporting rifle competition.

Lightweight sporting rifle is becoming popular because of its user-friendly nature, requiring less equipment than other rifle shooting disciplines where more equipment and specialist clothing is needed at the highest level.

The team who became silver medallists were drawn from all parts of Sussex, with Craig Austin from Aldingbourne, Nick Harvey from Lindfield, Steve Buckley from Horsham and Robin Brown and Tim Field from Uckfield and captain Richard Woolgar from Southwick. In finishing second, the team scored 1907 out of 2000, beating Devon into third place by just a point, with Oxfordshire and Derbyshire a further 20 points behind.

Winners Essex were in unbeatable form scoring a massive 1956 from 2000.

Top shot for Sussex was Robin Brown with a very impressive 392 out of 400.

This achievement means Sussex have three teams competing in the inter-county leagues and the results of the early rounds of these competitions are starting to come in.

The A team, competing in division one of the league, have had a tough start to the season, losing to Yorkshire in round one by 967-951 and being narrowly beaten by near neighbours Surrey in round two by 965- 962. Top score for Sussex was made by Tim Field (193) in round one and Nick Harvey (197) in two.

The B team suffered a similar start to the season in division three losing to top-of-the-table Shropshire A by 940-927 and unbeaten second-placed Durham and Cleveland in round two by 943-936.

Steve Buckley was top Sussex scorer in each of the first two rounds with 197 and 192.

The Sussex C team fared better beating Hampshire D in division five in the second round by 927-882 after losing to Middlesex A in the first round by 924-910.

Alex Henderson of Lindfield top scored in round one with 183 while Mike Martin of Southwick made a very creditable 192 in round two.
