Theatre world's cricketers put on a Selsey show

Hundreds turned out in lovely sunshine to watch the annual battle for the Sir Patrick Moore Cup, which for the second year saw Selsey take on the Thespian Thunderers.

A hog roast, bouncy castles and a craft stall all added to the family feel of the day – as did an excellent game of cricket.

The Thespian Thunderers are a team of actors, producers and directors and were skippered by Peter Sandys-Clarke, recently seen on TV in Indian Summers and soon to appear in Ross at the Chichester Festival Theatre.

The Thunderers batted first and, after a slow start, totalled 193 runs. Top scorer with 65 was Charles Robertshaw.

Only Selsey’s skipper Pete Amis’s intelligent field placings prevented the score from being much higher.

Selsey, in reply, started badly and were 18 for four by the end of the eighth over, which proved decisive. Despite an impressive partnership between Jim Amis (43) and Pete Horner (66), Selsey were all out for 170, with overs to spare.

The collapse was due mainly to a devastating opening spell by Jonny Muir. In his first three overs he took three for seven, and he finished with four for 21, having earlier scored 25 not out. Muir, whose parents live in Chichester, is off to Canada shortly to appear in a production about Simon and Garfunkel.

Freeman Le Page also impressed with an all-round performance that included scoring 28, then taking two for 18.

Selsey produced some excellent bowling figures with Tom Cripps, Jim Amis and Pete Horner faring well.

Between innings, Owls About Town displayed their wonderful birds. Kathy Amis and the ladies provided a very special tea during the interval. After the match, the Sir Patrick Moore Cup was presented to Sandys-Clarke by event organiser Bob Hoare.

Afterwards there was a performance by the excellent rock band Repeat Offender.
