Vets and ladies have plenty to cheer at Chichester

Chichester Golf Club vets beat Foxbridge 4½-1½ at home with a brilliant 6&5 win by Roy Chandler and John Paul backed up well by captain Andrew Grant and Ken Jackson's victory.

Ladies' captain Maggie Brand led the ladies and vets to a 5- triumph against local rivals Hill Barn.

It was a special occasion for Maggie '“ the only match she's played as ladies' captain because of illness.

She was determined to play one match before her reign as captain ends and was pleased with her own 4&3 victory partnering vets captain Andrew Grant.

COWDRAY PARK

The first finalist in the Cowdray Park seniors' singles knockout has been decided after Brian Carpenter overcame the stern challenge of John Stone, winning 2&1.

The match swung first one way and then the other. In the end the handicap allowance decided it in Brian's favour, plus an 8ft putt on the 17th green.

* Cowdray Park seniors returned to home soil after seven consecutive away matches, and showed a welcome return to form with a stunning 6-1 victory over a Petersfield side containing three former Cowdray Park members.

Highlight of the day came from Ken Young, 84, who scored a three on the par-four sixth but with a shot allowance finished with a two, which was too much for the opposition. He and John E Smith won their tie 6&5.

On a blustery, showery day, a visit to the links course at Hayling Island is not ideal.

So it proved for Cowdray seniors, who not only lost a lot of balls in the dunes, but the match as well, to a strong home side 6-2.

* Following the latest monthly stableford, the seniors' Eclectic standings have contracted further with John Kitchener still holding on to his lead, but John E Smith now his closest pursuer with 58 points.

But he is returning to Australia before the end of the season Significant moves came from David Heard (tenth to third), Harvey Terry (31st to 17th) and Rod Wooldridge (50th to 23rd), all within striking distance of the leader.

* The September Medal at Cowdray Park attracted 83 players.

Results: Div 1: Phil Cummins nett 65, Div 2: Paul Shepherd, 66; Div 3: Russell Stagg 64 (overall winner).

* The Kennington Cup, an 18-hole medal competition, attracted a field of 53. The winner was Obie Ayton with nett 67, runner-up Dick Whitcomb on 68.

SELSEY

The Presidents' Prize was up for grabs at Selsey Golf Club.

President Peter Terry greeted all 51 competitors, then sounded the horn for the shotgun start.

When all the scores were in, there were three people on 37 points fighting for third place but on countback Bernie Smith took the honours.

With 40 points, taking the runners-up prize was Ashley Barton and the winner with an impressive 43 points was Tony Lee.
