Winter's set in at Fishbourne

Fishbourne Bowling Club held the finals of their knockout competitions.

In the ladies’ singles Audrey Saunders met Chris Lankshear. Audrey took an early lead which Chris pulled back to lead 12-9 only for Audrey to lift her game and pull away steadily to win 21-15.

In the men’s singles, the holder Peter Winter faced Peter Massey. Winter scored nine without reply before Massey got into the game. Although Massey closed the gap to 13-11, Winter pulled away again and ran out winner by 21-15 to retain his title.

The two-wood singles pitted Bernard Wallsgrove against Jean Conway. Wallsgrove started steadily and ran out a comfortable 19-4 winner.

In the novice singles for players who had not won a major title, John Wingate met Mick Bleach. Wingate took the lead, Bleach caught up and went into the lead, then Wingate pulled ahead again – holding on to win 21-18.

In the consolation singles for first-round losers, Mick Bleach met Ron Beasley. Bleach won the first set 7-3 and in the second Beasley took a 4-0 lead but failed to score again – and Bleach won the title 2-0.

In the invitation drawn pairs, singles finalists Peter Winter and Peter Massey met, with Winter partnered by Jean Conway and Massey by Jo Richards.

Conway and Winter took an early lead which Richards and Massey pulled back to 8-8 only for Conway and Winter to run out winners by 24-10.

Winter was again in action in the drawn mixed pairs, partnered by Chris Lankshear and facing Marjorie Beasley and Malcolm Keane. It was 7-7 at nine ends when rain interrupted.

On the restart Lankshear and Winter found another gear, establishing a 15-7 lead. They kept control and won 27-13 to give Winter his weekend’s third title.

Winter was also in action in the pairs final partnered by Mick Bleach and facing Mick Howard and Brian Henham. Howard and Henham took the lead at the start and with Bleach and Winter unable to close the gap they ran out winners by 27-13.

There was a good turnout for this year’s club finals.

Southbourne drew on shots with Waterlooville in the Reflex League, but Southbourne won overall by winning on three out of the five triples played.

In their last BM League game of the season at home to Pagham, the points were shared three apiece – each team winning one rink by just one shot.

C&M LADIES’ LEAGUE

Chichester won division one, their 65-point tally putting them seven ahead of runners-up Crablands. Witterings finished bottom. Division-two winners were Arundel, ahead of East Preston. Worthing Pavilion were bottom.

West Sussex entertained Dorset’s premier and A teams at Westergate in pre-season friendlies. The West Sussex premier team started badly, winning only one game in each of the morning sessions to trail 12-4 at lunch.

But the afternoon saw West Sussex starting to play to their true form.

In the third session they won three of four games and picked up the bonus points in the pairs to pull back to 16-12.

In the final session they won three and drew one, taking the bonus points in the triples by two shots and easily taking the bonus points in the fours.

This gave them a 23-17 win and 193-156 shots victory, a satisfying result.

The A team match was different with West Sussex starting strongly, winning all four games in the first session and three out of four in the second to lead 14-2 at lunch.

West Sussex continued strongly with a 100 per cent record in the afternoon for an overall 38-2 and 238-126 victory.

WEST WITTERING

West Wittering Short Mat Bowls Club are holding an open evening for non-members on Friday, September 23, (7.30-9.30pm) at the Memorial Hall in Elms Lane. Everybody is welcome, with or without bowling experience.

During a demonstration match of about 20 minutes, the main points of the game will be explained. There will be a chance to have a go, guided by experienced bowlers. Bowls will be supplied.

To save mats from damage, visitors should wear shoes with soft, flat soles.

The club hold bowling sessions at the Memorial Hall all year round, every Monday morning and afternoon and every Thursday morning, afternoon and evening. Annual membership is £5 with a one-off joining fee of £5.

In addition members pay £1.50 per session attended.

The club’s first match of the new season resulted in a 77-49 win against Witterings.
