THEY'RE often the whipping boys of the Littlehampton Gazette League '“ and are frequent winners of the wooden spoon.

But Bognor Regis Bowls Club have turned the tables on the opposition and won promotion to the top tier of bowls in the area '“ as champions.

They will play next summer in division one after a wonderful season in which they won 11, drew one and lost only two games.

They amassed a total of 99 points and an average of more than seven points per game out of a possible ten.

Highlights of Bognor's season included 10-0 wins against East Preston and The Witterings and a 6-4 win at Southbourne '“ so often a fortress for the home team on their artificial surface.

Captain Ned Waddock provided the inspiration and encouragement in leading the team to glory, and to the chance to play the elite teams such as Tarring Priory, Petworth and Chichester.

It meant there was a carnival atmosphere in the end-of-season match between the teams representing the president and vice-president.

The president's team won.
