Africa in the Lounge gigs announced for Brighton

Africa in the Lounge returns to Brighton for another series of concerts drawing on musical traditions from across Africa.

The next shows will be streamed live on Youtube and Facebook from Ooosh! studios in Brighton on April 23 and 30.

The concerts presented by African Night Fever, Yaram Arts, Brighton Dome and Bristol Beacon, feature feel-good reggae from Gregory Fabulous and Tuffwise and Afro-jazz with a big band sound from Nubiyan Twist.

Spokeswoman Hannah Collisson said: “African Night Fever has been bringing the best musicians from Africa and the African diaspora to audiences in Brighton and beyond for over 15 years. Yaram Arts is the UK’s leading music development agency specialising in African artists. Africa in the Lounge has showcased music from across the continent over 12 concerts to date. The shows attracted live audiences of 1,000 and have now been watched over 7,000 times.

“Now they are joined by partners Brighton Dome and Bristol Beacon for this third series of live streamed concerts.”

Gregory Fabulous & Tuffwize is on Friday, April 23 2021, 8pm-9pm, live streamed on African Night Fever Facebook and YouTube.

Nubiyan Twist featuring K.O.G. is on Friday, April 30, 8pm-9pm, streamed live on African Night Fever Facebook and YouTube.

“Nubiyan Twist are a UK Afro-Jazz nine-piece band led by Tom Excell, fusing groove driven music with sound system culture and improvisation.

“Their infectious style draws on jazz, hip-hop, Afrobeat, latin, soul, reggae and dance music, blending ultra-tight musicianship with a powerful big band sound.

“Their fans include Mary Ann Hobbs, Gilles Peterson, Huey Morgan, David Rodigan, Craig Charles and David Byrne who chose the band for his Meltdown festival at Southbank Centre.

Nubiyan Twist released their second album Freedom Fables on March 12 2021 to a series of great reviews, with single If I Know playlisted on BBC Radio 6 Music.”
