Club chairman Chris Hough said: “As part of CMS’ celebration of the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, Angela will this evening discuss the life and significance of this great composer with the help of PowerPoint slides and demonstrations of some of his finest works for the piano.

“Beethoven has been Angela’s favourite composer since childhood, and she was fortunate to have the opportunity to absorb the spirit of the composer while she was a student in Vienna, the city where Beethoven spent the final 27 years of his life and composed most of his well-known works.

“Over the years, Angela has performed many of Beethoven’s major piano works and has lectured extensively on his life and music to students of all ages. In this evening’s lecture/recital she will include the first movement of the Appassionata Sonata and a complete performance of the Sonata in A Flat Major Op 110.”

Angela was born in London, beginning piano lessons with her father, New Zealand pianist and composer, Douglas Zanders. She later studied at The Purcell School and Trinity College of Music in London after which she was awarded an Austrian government scholarship to study at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna. Later, Angela studied at Goldsmiths’ College, University of London, where she took a B Mus degree specialising in performance. At Trinity College, Angela won many competitions and awards. She later took lessons and great inspiration from the international pianist Murray Perahia and studied chamber music with William Pleeth and Raphael Wallfisch.

Angela has performed all over the UK, including London’s Wigmore Hall, South Bank and St. Martin’s-in-the-Fields and at St David’s Hall in Cardiff. She has broadcast for BBC Radio 3 and has given performances throughout Europe and in Australia and New Zealand, both as soloist and accompanist and as pianist in the Solarek Piano Trio, which she formed in 1992. For ten years Angela was accompanist at the Centre for Young Musicians in London.

Chris added: “Angela has been giving lecture recitals for many years as she has a special interest in promoting the accessibility of classical music for those with little or no knowledge of it. She has lectured in music appreciation at Birkbeck College, University of London, for the WEA and the U3A and currently runs her own music appreciation courses in Chichester, Petersfield and Fareham. She has also taken students on musical tours of Vienna, visiting composers’ houses and museums and arranging concert visits.”
