REVIEW: Natalie Clein, Funtington Music Group, Chichester

Natalie Clein, the world famous cellist, played at the 100th Funtington Music Group Celebration Concert at the University of Chichester on 13 November, with Katya Apekisheva on piano.

The programme Natalie chose was largely music from the early 20th Century and the concert began with a performance of Kodaly’s Sonatina, where they both demonstrated tonal warmth and emotional balance which was a joy to listen to.

Then the audience heard a short piece by Kurtag, Grave, typical of the composer with his pared down, refined, concentrated and highly original and creative music.

The first half ended with a piece by Janacek, Pohadka, a magical and imaginative work, where both musicians showed they were subtle and meticulous interpreters of Janacek’s music.

Katya Apekisheva, a widely experienced international pianist, opened the second half with three pieces from Grieg’s Lyric Pieces. Here Katya effectively and beautifully portrayed the vivid tones and melancholy of the music reflecting both the spirit and natural wonders of Grieg’s native Norway.

Then both musicians played very effectively Grave by Lutoslawski, and 3 Kleine Stucke by Weburn. The music of both these composers is unpredictable, and both lead their listeners through a musical underworld where normal rules do not seem to apply. Our musicians impassioned and compelling renditions, coupled with their inner warmth and subtle interpretation were truly remarkable.

The full house of members, visitors and students then heard Debussy’s Sonata which was the climax of a very special evening. David Tinsley, Chairman of the Funtington Music Group said, “This was a really appropriate way to celebrate one hundred events at the University and it was wonderful to hear music played by two such talented and magnificent artists.”
