The power shortage at the Tesco Extra store on Fishbourne Road rendered some food products unsellable as freezers failed.

Peter Homer, who went into the shop at about 9.30am, described the situation as ‘chaos’.

He said: “Apparently there was some sort of electrical failure early today, and they are having to dispose of all the frozen and chilled food - huge quantities. There was only rather dim lighting when I went in.”

He added that the main doors were not working and customers were directed to smaller emergency doors and informed there was no frozen food for sale.

Tesco head office said there were no electrical incidents on their logs for the area.
