The MP for Chichester is encouraging residents to do their bit to support our ‘lively’ local fishing industry by buying local fresh fish.

Gillian Keegan has put together a dedicated list of all the places where people can buy local catch on her website.

It comes as the Government announced a £10 million package to support the UK’s fishing industry amid the coronavirus crisis.

Two funds, both administered by the Marine Management Organisation, are targeting those most in need.

The first, the Fisheries Response Fund, will directly contribute towards the fixed business costs of over 10,00 catching and aquaculture businesses that have been adversely impacted by the downturn in markets for fish and shellfish.

The second is a grant scheme to support the sale of fish locally.

Mrs Keegan said: “This scheme is one of many examples of how our Government is working to protect people’s livelihoods.

“I am very grateful for the hard work of my colleagues across Government who have implemented this package of support.

“We have a lively fishing industry in Selsey and the Chichester Harbour and I am pleased that this support will be particularly helpful to them.

“Even though we are unable to get down to the beaches and the beautiful harbour as the weather improves you can still buy local fresh fish and do your bit to support our local fishing industry.”

Tony Delahunty, President of the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations, said the Government scheme was ‘really positive news’ for the fisherman in our area.

“I am pleased this scheme is targeting to the most impacted within the sector, predominantly the inshore fleet,” he said.

Support for fishermen is also being provided by The Fishermen’s Mission, a charity set up in 1881.

Nick O’Neill, Mission Area Officer on the Southcoast, said the charity could help fishermen who were struggling with money worries, or feeling isolated and alone.

“We are still here to help you,” he said.

“If you are a fisherman on a UK boat; a retired fisherman; or a member of a fisherman’s family please do not hesitate to contact us.

“These are very difficult times and the support we can give you may make all the difference.

“We will always be there to help and may be able to offer further financial support and access grants for you.

“Together, we can get through this crisis.”
