Students prove their Worth in the community

They say never work with animals and small children but students from Worth School did just that, with excellent results.

More than 200 students took part in the school’s first ‘Worth in the Community Day’, organised to help them develop a greater insight into community issues and help groups.

They spent Thursday (July 7) working at primary schools, such as Turners Hill Primary, and animal welfare centres including Cats’ Protection, at Chelwood Gate, and Raystede, at Ringmer.

Other activities included gardening for the elderly and litter-picking on Brighton beach and around East Grinstead town centre, as well as clearing Himalayan Balsam weed in green space around Gatwick.

In addition, students put on a drama production and a musical concert for residents in local care and nursing homes.

Julian Williams, director of the wider curriculum programme at Worth, said: “Our inaugural ‘Worth in the Community Day’ was a huge success and enjoyed greatly by all of our boys and girls.

“Treasured memories and some lasting bonds have been made today and I am sure will pave the way for further local community service opportunities in the future”
