After the clap for the NHS, those outside the hospital sing happy birthday to Captain Tom Moore before the Archway Choir sing out over loud speakers in a moving tribute to the NHS, others working in care and Captain Tom on his birthday.

The choir music was organised by Leanne Davis, a sister on coronary care at Eastbourne DGH.

She said: “I was incredibly moved and inspired by a video shared on social media several weeks ago, of a choir recording being played outside Charing Cross Hospital in London.

“The recording of Amazing Grace is both incredibly powerful and poignant.

“As a keen member of the Archway Choir, I wanted to try and create a similar event at Eastbourne DGH - the hospital that holds a special place in my heart having worked there for the last 15 years and having been born there 33 years ago.

“There are four other members of ESHT (East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust) staff who are part of The Archway Choir, which made the idea feel even more personal and special.

“I knew that it would not be possible to sing live, but with the help of our talented choir director, Jane Reeves, we were able to use a recording from our Christmas show of a song that means a lot to us - You’ll Never Walk Alone and Climb Every Mountain.

“The aim was to send a powerful message of hope and solidarity to local residents, patients, fellow staff and of course, to thank Colonel Tom and wish him the happiest of birthdays.

“I think that we have achieved our aim and I am delighted.”
