In the past seven days, Hastings recorded another 767 cases of Covid-19 at a rate of 827.7 per 100,000 people. This is slightly down on a previous high of 961.6 cases per 100,000 people in the week to Christmas Day. During that week, 891 cases were reported.

In Rother, there were 574 cases in the past week, at a rate of 597.4 per 100,000. In the week to Christmas Day, the rate was 633.8 per 100,000 people and saw 609 cases reported.

Hastings still has the highest rate of Covid-19 infections, according to the statistics, but Crawley, Eastbourne and Arun are now recording a higher weekly rate than Rother.

Last week, the Government announced that primary schools in Hastings and Rother would not be reopening this week due to the high Covid-19 case numbers.

Primary schools were due to reopen next Monday (January 4) and could remain closed until the measures are reviewed again by January 18, the Government said.

Both areas were put under tougher Tier 4 restrictions on December 20 following the discovery of a new variant of the virus, which scientists said is more transmissible than older variants. The rest of Sussex joined Hastings and Rother in Tier 4 on December 26.

Mr Johnson will address the nation at 8pm to outline the latest steps to be taken to address the surge in Covid-19 cases.

He has previously said there was ‘no question’ there would be stricter measures rolled out across the country.

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have already implemented national restrictions.
