75th anniversary celebrations at the De La Warr

THE EARL and Countess De La Warr unveiled a plaque to commemorate the De La Warr Pavilions 75th Anniversary at a special celebratory evening on Sunday.

More than 500 people gathered in the foyer as the 11th Earl De La Warr, William Herbrand Sackville, and Countess Anne Pamela De La Warr, unveiled the plaque which is sited on the wall by the north staircase.

It was 75 years to the day that the De La Warr Pavilion first opened its doors in 1935 and, after unveiling the plaque, the Earl paid tribute to his late grandfather, Herbrand Edward Dundonald Brassey Sackville, the 9th Earl De La Warr.

He said in 1935 the 9th Earl was the inspiration for the De La Warr and commented on on the iconic building’s architects, Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff.

The 75th anniversary celebrations continued with a special concert of Carmina Burana, performed by the Philharmonic Chorus and conducted by Stefan Bevier.

The choice of this concert was deemed befitting for the occasion as it was also created in 1935 by German composer Carl Orff.
