A27 delays set to get worse

DELAYS caused by roadworks on the A27 near Lewes look set to get worse.

Work on rebuilding the roundabout at Beddingham starts today (Tuesday) as part of the A27 Southerham to Beddingham improvement which is set to be completed in July next year.

During the various phases of the rebuilding work, the roundabout and the three approaches to it will be reduced to a single lane with occasional overnight use of traffic lights.

The restrictions will remain in place at all times during the work for the safety of road users and work crews.

Highways Agency project leader Chris Bacon said: 'Rebuilding both Southerham and Beddingham roundabouts is an essential part of the Southerham to Beddingham scheme which will improve safety and reduce congestion on this section of the A27.

'Work on the Southerham roundabout started in June and after initial problems as drivers became aware of the restrictions, delays are now mainly restricted to peak times only.

'We do expect that drivers will experience further minor delays as work on Beddingham roundabout gets under way.

'We advise drivers to check traffic and travel conditions before making journeys as well as allowing extra time for their journeys.

'We are also asking drivers to observe the new signs at the Beddingham level crossing and remember not to stop in the yellow box on the crossing.

'Trains are passing over the crossing at lower speed at present as a further safety measure but you should not enter the crossing unless it is clear and safe to exit at the other side.'

Drivers using the A27 can sign up for e-mail messages with up-to-date information about the project by following the road projects link on the Highways Agency website: www.highways.gov.uk.
