Anger at eleven week long road closures

Crowhurst Road will shut between the junction with Queensway and Forewood Lane from June 17 because of work currently being carried out on the Bexhill to Hastings Link Road.

The one-and-a-half mile stretch is not expected to reopen before August 30.

Swainham Lane will also be closed during the same period, from the junction with Crowhurst Road to the railway line.

Traffic will be diverted via Telham Lane.

The news of the closures has angered villagers and motorists who regularly have to visit Crowhurst.

One angry mum, who lives in Crowhurst and works in St Leonards, said: “I noticed the sign this week saying the road would be closed from Monday June 17 .

“This is going to be massively inconvenient as I will have to drive up through Telham instead which will add to my journey to and from work and mean I can’t get home at lunch time at all.

“The road closure will add an extra good 40 minutes drive every day.

“Apart from that I would complain about the amount of trucks and highways vehicles that come up and down the road, often with little regard for any other traffic - these are narrow lanes.”

Hastings mum Sam Potter has to take her daughter to Crowhurst School in Forewood Lane.

She said: “I am really annoyed.

“We need the Link Road, so I suppose it can’t be helped, but the traffic going in and out of Telham Lane is going to be terrible.”

The closures will allow for the construction of a temporary haul route and associated electrical works for the Bexhill to Hastings Link Road.

East Sussex County Council, which is responsible for the road closure, has said a safe route will be provided for pedestrians and vehicular access for residents and to properties wherever possible for the duration of the works.
