Bin collectors to go on strike

Refuse collectors across Rother are set to go on a two-day strike later this week.

GMB Union members working for Kier, Rother District Council’s waste collection contractor, have given notice of strike action on Thursday March 12 and Friday March 13.

However collection services are not being suspended and the local authority is asking residents to put their bins out by 7am on the morning of their collection day as usual.

The council says it is aware of the roads where collections have been missed due to strike action and says there is no need for residents in these roads to notify the council of non-collection.

A spokesperson for Rother District council said: “We are advised by Kier that contingency arrangements will keep any disruption to services to a minimum.

“We are asking anyone whose bin is not collected at the usual time to leave their bin at the edge of the property to allow Kier to arrange collection as soon as possible.”

The authority added that it is continuing to monitor the situation and work with Kier to ensure the impact on residents living in the district is kept to a minimum.

Residents should only report a missed collection if neighbouring properties have had their bins collected.
