Bognor girl's flower power wins prize

A seven-year-old girl has kept up her family's tradition by designing a winning floral display for Bognor Regis seafront.

Sophia Wawrzewksi took first place in the annual competition organised by the Guides and Bognor Regis Town Council for the second year in a row. Her older sister also won the contest for two years.

The design by Sophia, of 1st Pagham and Aldwick Rainbows, is already brightening up the eastern flowerbed on the seafront mounds by Clarence Road.

She said: "I'll be back next year when I'm in the Brownies and hope to win the competition for a third time."

Her colourful display features a bouquet of various flowers in bloom comprised of plants such as marigolds, cordyline and verbena rigida.

The winning Brownie was Emma Walters, ten, of 1st Bognor Brownies, in her first success. She drew a sunrise of red, orange and yellow comprising marigolds, begonias and pelagoniums among others.

"It's good to win. I liked drawing the design with all the colours," she said. Her design fills the middle of the three flowerbeds on the mounds.

The runners-up were Keely Young, five, of Pagham and Aldwick Rainbows, and Lucy Budge, nine, of 1st Bersted Brownies. Some 60 entries were received in all.

The western flower bed comprises the Guides' trefoil in yellow and blue to celebrate the movement's centenary. Two Guides and one Brownie helped to dig in the plants.

Each bed consists of 250-300 flowers.

The winners and runners-up were presented with their certificates by Bognor in Bloom committee member and town councillor Jeanette Warr.

She said: "The enthusiasm of the youngsters is fantastic. They compete each year and the designs get better and better."

Penny Thomas, the Guides' divisional commissioner, said: "The girls enjoy winning the competition and they enjoy bringing their families and friends to the seafront in the summer to see their flower beds.

"They also want to be part of Bognor in Bloom to help the town get a good mark in the South and South East in Bloom competition."
